Fear And Loathing
It’s a sign of the times that technology has freed us from having to travel from point to point throughout America to see the effects of what is happening these days. The Internet takes our questions to people from coast to coast in seconds. The replies come in minutes or hours and our opinions can be formed shortly thereafter.
However, in the last few months I have been physically traveling the highways, through rural, suburban and urban communities of all manner, from one end of the country to the other. The most personal observations come from what you can see with your own eyes and adding that to firsthand accounts I’ve received, it really comes down to something I’m stealing from the late Dr. Thompson…
It is a time of fear and loathing in the United States.
Fear for the future, not only for our businesses, personal wealth, health, freedom, speech and beliefs, but for the future of our families, children, parents and neighbors as well.
I have passed factories empty and sealed. Numerous restaurants and shops closed and boarded. Houses half built with framing warping and falling. Countless cars along roads with handwritten ‘For Sale’ signs in their windows. Neighborhoods lined with realty signs, ‘Short Sale’ and ‘Foreclosure’ banners on them.
These are the ‘Green Shoots’ the administration is talking about?
Emails of how everyone’s money is worth less and there’s not as much of it as there was at this point last year. Despite promises to the contrary, everyone knows the administration will have to dramatically raise taxes to cover the government’s runaway spending. With the countries’ unfunded liabilities closing in on $58 trillion, every taxpayer in America is on the hook for almost $200,000 each.
Everyone knows that the health care system is expensive and can be hard to access, but no one wants to lose what they have in favor of spending even more for something not as good as what they have. They see that political correctness has led to cases where municipalities are promoting unqualified candidates on account of their race out of fear of being sued, leaving the populace with substandard services paid for by their own money. They read news accounts of federal officers going door to door without warrants searching for legally purchased firearms, while elsewhere there are actual laws being broken and those actions ignored.
There is so much incredulity that these things could be happening here, in America, yet everyone sees these things all around…these things and more.
There is fear of a tomorrow worse than yesterday. Fear of freedoms being taken from our hands by fascism and authoritarianism. Fear that what we have worked for so hard and so long being taken from us and given piecemeal to others. Fear that the promise of our rights and freedoms may be broken. And loathing for those among us who would support such measures, through action or apathy.
It is fear and loathing of the government, of our ‘leaders’ within it, of those who pay for favors from them with votes or money.
And for those with the awareness to see the growing storm around them, the situation beings worries manifesting themselves in sleepless nights and hours of wondering what the best path be to protect them and those around them. Is there a way to avoid the path of these troubles? Is there a way to prevent the downward spiral from continuing its move? Most feel powerless against the nearly absolute control of the Federal Government and the career politicians that run it.
Is there a way to save America?
I’d like to believe that the answer to that would be up to the citizens of America, and I wonder and I hope that it’s true.
We will fight with all we have against every single enemy of our country or Constitution, be they foreign or domestic.
