A top Russian security official says Moscow reserves the right to conduct pre-emptive nuclear strikes to safeguard the country against aggression on both a large and a local scale, according to a newspaper interview published Wednesday.

Presidential Security Council chief Nikolai Patrushev also singled out the U.S. and NATO, saying Moscow’s Cold War foes still pose potential threats to Russia despite what he called a global trend toward local conflicts.

Officials are examining “a variety of possibilities for using nuclear force, depending on the situation and the intentions of the possible opponent,” Patrushev was quoted as saying. “In situations critical to national security, options including a preventative nuclear strike on the aggressor are not excluded.”

And these are the very same Russians that the current administration wants to give full access to all our nuclear facilities to? That makes a lot of sense.

Not.

I’ve been telling people around these parts that I believe that we will all live to see a nuclear exchange of some sort, which isn’t a particularly pleasant prospect, but with the rampant stupidity in the world today, I believe that it’s nearly a certainty.

Some people think I’m crazy, but with Pakistan’s A.Q Khan and North Korea’s Kim Jong Il spreading nuclear technology around like butter on toast, recent nuclear-power Pakistan having their facilities nearly overrun by extremists on a nearly weekly basis and nearly every other country in the world wanting to get their hands on a nuke, I’m not feeling the love these days.

With all that and what appears to be the administration’s desire to make the United States as weak as possible militarily and economically, I’d say that we’re going to get served up the fuzzy end of the lollipop in the upcoming times.
