Pakistani Roulette
Something that’s been kicking around in my head recently is the ultimate nuclear option. And I’m not talking about the total screwing our own Congress is giving us, I’m talking about quite possibly the worst thing I can think of in terms of what leaders of the world could possibly have to do.
That option is using nuclear weapons within their own borders.
Pakistan, our allies at the no-so-stable crossroads of Iran, India, China and Afghanistan, is clearly losing control of their own country and the real horror show starts when you consider that they have a fair sized stockpile of ‘Special Weapons.’
With the Taliban firmly entrenched in the provinces of Swat, North and South Waziristan, Buner, Shangla, Bajaur, Lower Dir and Orakzai, the Taliban control over 60% of Northwest Pakistan, and with the numerous recent attacks on civilian and military installations in the rest of the country, clearly the situation is deteriorating.
Somewhere in a secretive, heavily guarded room you know that there are several very nervous political and military leaders who are considering the very real strategic possibility that at sometime in the near future they may have to target Taliban strongholds with the most powerful weapons in their inventory.
Strategically, the best time for that is coming. Winter is not far away and many civilians in the colder regions controlled by the Taliban are leaving those areas in a traditional seasonal migration, while the Taliban are staying as the weather makes for a fine natural defense. The civilians are also fleeing those areas trying to get clear of the final seasonal push being planned by government forces, who obviously don’t know crap about OPSEC.
Given the limited options they have, what would you do? Let the country and the nuclear weapons be taken over by raving lunatics who want to bring back the Middle Ages or drop a few tactical warheads on 10,000 of the bad guys (and tragically a bunch of civilians)Â to prevent that?
We will fight with all we have against every single enemy of our country or Constitution, be they foreign or domestic.
