Charlie Burns

After a tough battle with cancer, Charlie Burns, longtime fixture on the central Texas production scene passed away yesterday.

Charlie toured with bands and mixed front-of-house, which is where Merle Haggard gave him the nickname, “Captain Feedback,” which may not strike the general populace as a great nickname, but anytime someone on a tour does anything to make that kind of mark and not get canned, it’s something good.

He was probably best known for doing production for LD Systems, where he helped to make thousands of shows of all sizes possible, from a PA on a stick in some generic ballroom to piles of gear at the San Antonio Rodeo. And as opposed to some production folks, he managed to do it with a degree of charm and humor, even when things might not be so rosy.

He will be missed by his friends and family…and as should be the norm, we should all take a moment to remember him and all those who have passed on before us, to recall their contributions to our lives and honor the things they accomplished while they were with us.

    Hi Scooter,
    …..Been awhile my friend!
Charlie certainly did his job with an awesome mix of “charm & humor” under often challenging conditions – my heart goes out to his family – He will be missed.

How long was Charlie at LDS, Scooter? I think I remember him from a nearly impossibly long time ago.

As long as I can remember…at least fifteen years. He moved on to a production company in Vegas a few years back and then to Austin.

It’s really starting to get disconcerting these days. A lot of good folks from our part of reality seem to be shuffling off this mortal coil…

I wonder if it’s really possible that I recall him from 1984. I was running with Duke Jupiter, and we did two weeks through Texas with Stevie Ray Vaughan. LD Systems was the production company and they were just splendid. I’ve never forgotten that.

I still have an LD t-shirt from that tour.

Well said Scooter. Charlie hired me for my first lighting tech gig and gave me a chance to prove myself. No matter how crazy things got one thing I always appreciated about Charlie was that he was there, he would answer his phone and you could actually find him when things went south at a gig.
